A
large structure comes into view on the left as you cross over
the Konohana Bridge from Hokko, Osaka's North Port. There you
see a golden onion atop a towering smokestack and colorful red
and yellow walls. What is this place that looks as if it came
straight out a children's picture book? Is it a castle in an
amusement park? Or a fortress in a fantasyland? No, the building,
known as the Maishima Plant and the pride of the City of Osaka,
is a waste incineration plant.
